Sexuality education programs equip youth with knowledge and tools to engage safely in sexual activity and protect themselves from HIV, other sexually transmitted infections STIsand becoming pregnant. Youth need to be educated about adolescent development, sexuality, anatomy and physiology, the basics about STIs, and the choices involved when engaging in sexual activity. Many youth initiate sexual activity during adolescence.
PIP: Changes in sexual activities and attitudes of today's youth are reviewed. It is concluded that adolescent sexual behavior is not much different from what it was in the last decade, although young people tend to have their 1st sexual experience earlier than in the past and tend to talk about sex more openly. The percent of women who are not virgins at marriage is not markedly higher than it was in the s, nor has the incidence of school-age unwed mothers increased in the last few years.
We engaged with three core resolutions; namely Youth and Human Rights, Violence against Women and Girls, and Discrimination against Women and Girls, as well as closely following discussions around the resolution renewing the mandate of the Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. With a focus on Violence and Discrimination against Women, this session will have a significant impact on the safety of women around the world.
